LUCKNOW: A youth and his girlfriend were shot at allegedly by the relatives of the girl when they were about to board a passenger train back to their home town Hardoi at platform no. 2 of Alamnagar railway station on Wednesday morning. The relatives opposed their relationship. However, GRP said that the case appeared to be suspicious and stage-managed.

The youth was identified as Mahesh Chandra Soni and his girlfriend Parul Singh. The two were immediately taken to Balrampur hospital where their condition was stated to be stable. Mahesh has lodged a complaint with the police accusing four relatives of Parul, including Sudhir Kumar Singh, Navneet Kumar Singh, Girish Kumar Singh and Uday Pratap Singh, of firing at him and Parul.

The GRP, however, denied the allegations of the youth and said that three of those mentioned in the complaint by him were present with the Hardoi police at the time of the incident when the police was raiding the possible hideouts of the man. Mahesh and Parul had eloped two days back and came to Lucknow with an intention to get married. According to the GRP, the girl's parents had lodged an FIR with Hardoi police against the man citing that Parul was a minor. On the complaint of the girl's family, police apprehended the family members of Soni, after which his family got in touch with Mahesh. When he got to know of the ordeal, he decided to come back.

According to GRP, they were boarding the train back to Hardoi on Wednesday morning. "From their demeanour and what all they have told about themselves so far, it appears to be stage-managed. We will be over with the investigations in a day or two," said Amitabh Yash, SP, Railways.

When asked if it were not the girls relatives who fired at the couple, who could be behind the attack, the official said, "we have to find this out". GRP also got hold of Soni's cousin Hari Om at Alamnagar station. Soni had informed the police that Hari Om has witnessed the incident. However, when police questioned Hari Om, he said he was not present at the station.

GRP said it is still to be proved if the girl is a minor, as alleged by her family in the FIR lodged against Soni in Hardoi. Her age can be proved only if she produces certain certificates or is ready for the medical examination. "The nature of the injury has also made the case look suspicious", said SP. The girl received an injury on her right hand and the man was shot at on his left hand. The blackening around the injury shows that the two have been fired at from a close range, as close as 5 cm or so. Anybody wanting to kill the two would have fired at the chest or head in order to hit the vital organs, said GRP officers. The investigations, however, are still on.
