CHENNAI: The Pallikaranai police on Sunday arrested a 38-year-old construction worker on charges of murdering his wife, suspecting her of infidelity. He has been sent to Puzhal prison.
Police said R Suresh (38), a resident of Veerapandi Nagar in Nanmangalam, strangled his wife S Kumari (28) with her sari on Sunday morning. Suresh went to the police station and told the officials that he had killed his wife. "Our team rushed to his house and confirmed his wife's death," a police officer said.
Police said Suresh and Kumari had been married for 11 years and have two children. "He suspected her because she stopped spending the nights with him at their house," a police officer said. Suresh is said to have told the police that his wife had disappeared on Saturday afternoon and came back the next morning. He confronted her over it.
Suresh told police that he had no intention of killing his wife. He had told her that she should stop going away in the night and instead take care of their children. On Sunday, in a fit of anger, he pushed her down and she died, he told the police.
Neighbours however said the couple quarrelled frequently. "He used to beat her up daily, demanding money for liquor," a neighbour, M Santhi said.
Police booked Suresh under Section 302 (murder) of Indian Penal Code. He was produced at the Tambaram judicial court where he was remanded in judicial custody for 15 days.
