KANPUR: In a bizarre incident, a jilted loverinjected a student of B Ed with poison a" on October 6 last a" after she refused to respond to his advances and threatened to inform the police. The girl was admitted to the hospital where she died on Tuesday afternoon.
Reports said Pooja Tewari was allegedly being harassed by one Shailendra of Harbans Mohal in Kanpur for the past several years. Even after Pooja and her family shifted out of Kanpur and settled in Unnao, he would followed the girl regularly. He used to intercept Pooja on her way to Thakurji Mahavidyalaya in Unnao where she was pursuing her Bed course. So much so that Shailendra got himself enrolled in Poojaas class itself, said a cousin of Pooja talking to TOI on Tuesday afternoon.
Allegations are that on October 6, Shailendra intercepted Pooja outside the campus. When she threatened to raise an alarm, he allegedly got hold of her and injected some poisonous substance. Pooja somehow reached home and informed her parents about it who in turn rushed her to the district hospital. The doctors later referred her to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital in Kanpur where she died on Tuesday afternoon.
However, a common friend of Pooja and Shailendra had a completely different story about the incident. According to him, the two were in love for the past several years and their respective families had no objection over their affair after the two assured them that they were committed to each other and their relationship as well. On October 6, Pooja learnt that Shailendra had married a girl of his familyas choice and kept the whole thing a closely guarded secret. She then decided to meet and confront Shailendra on the issue.
Allegations are that she even met the Shailendraas parents, who, too, refused to come to her rescue and washed their hands off the entire episode claiming that they were helpless before their son. We are not sure if he injected her with poison or she consumed poison herself to end her life, but this is how it all has happened,a? said a common friend of the two families.
Poojaas father SK Tewari, who is a teacher at the Central School in Unnao, in his written complaint with the Kotwali police in Unnao accused Shailendra of injecting her with poison. Tewari said he approached the Unnao police with his complaint on the day of the incident (October 6), but the police refused to intervene. It was only after he approached the Unnao district magistrate Arvind Dwivedi that the Kotwali police registered a case on his complaint on October 8.
The case was lodged under Section 388 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which provides for action against anyone who ascommits extortion by putting any person in fear of an accusation against that persona?. After Poojaas death, the case was converted into that of murder. Investigating officer (IO) of the case a" senior sub inspector TP Verma a" told TOI that efforts were on to trace and arrest the accused. asI recorded Poojaas statement on Sunday when she did accuse Shailendra of injecting her with poison,a? SSI Verma said.
