HUBLI: Ramesh Barker, a KSRTC driver, allegedly set his wife ablaze at his residence in Ganesh Colony near Navnagar in wee hours of Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Manjula alias Vidya Barker (28). Police sources said that the accused was pestering his wife to bring money from her parents to buy a site. This led to frequent quarrels between the couple.
On Tuesday night too, Ramesh quarrelled with his wife and in a fit of anger, he allegedly poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze while she was asleep, said police sources.The incident came to light when Manjula's brother tried to call her on her mobile. Ramesh, who answered the call said his sister sustained burns in an accidental fire. Suspecting the accused, Manjula's brother rushed to the house only to find his sister dead and he immediately alerted police about the incident.
Manjula's parents have lodged a case of dowry harassment and murder against the accused. Based on the complaint, police took Ramesh into their custody. A case has been registered at the woman police station, Hubli.PI N R Chalawadi told TOI that couple who was staying in a rented house in Ganesh Nagar have a one-year old girl baby. Manjula hails from Kunnur while Ramesh hails from Hadalgi in Gadag district.
