SURAT: A 70-year-old NRI woman, identified as Gulabben Patel, was brutally murdered in Punagam area of the city in the wee hours of Wednesday.
Initially, the incident was reported as loot with murder. However, as investigation progressed in the day, police found valuables that included 25 tolas gold and Rs 1 lakh in cash intact in the cupboard's hidden slots.
However, cops are yet to establish the motive behind the murder.
Gulabben's body was found in her house with neck slit with a sharp weapon, stab wounds in stomach and her head bleeding. Her mouth was stuffed with cloth rags.
Her husband passed away two years ago and her four sons and two daughters are settled in the US.
The incident came to light when the milkman informed her nephew Nitin Patel, who lives in the neighbourhood, after no one opened the door for a long time around 6 am. Nitin and the milkman then entered the house from the back door, which was open.
The victim was living with her maid, Savita Kevat. On Tuesday, Kevat had gone to her native village in Jambusar taluka of Bharuch district. Police have gone to Kevat's village to question her. Kevat's son Raju works as Nitin's driver and was present on duty on Wednesday.
When police first visited the house, they found cupboards open. Nitin informed police that the valuables were missing. However, checking hidden slots in cupboard the jewellery and cash were found, said K M Gohil, police inspector, Puna police station.
