Oct 12, 2011: SMS to help women in distress formally launched

THIRUVANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Womenas Commission (KWC) has formally launched the Short Messaging Service (SMS) for women in distress to help them register complaints through SMS. The alerts will reach the commission and the police official concerned.

Inaugurating the Short Messaging Service in the city on Tuesday evening, chief ministerOommen Chandy said the SMS will go a long way in addressing the problems faced by women and it will also help speed up the procedures to redress their grievances. asThrough this service, women in distress can send an SMS to 537252 to register their complaint or know the current status of the action taken and can also obtain the contact numbers of KWC officials, police officials, address of hostels and Jagrathasamithis in respective districts,a? he said.
KWC chairperson Justice Sreedevi said women stranded at railway stations, bus stops and other places at night or at odd hours can immediately send an SMS to 537252. The alert will reach the police and officials of the commission, and immediate action will be taken to help the women.
Social welfare minister M K Muneer said along with the SMS, the government has constituted a committee led by poet and activist Sugathakumari to look into the cases of abuse against women and domestic violence in the state. The first meeting of the committee will be chaired by the chief minister on October 17.
All that the women need to do is send an SMS to 537252 in the format, type Vanitha leave space, type Comp (short form for complaint) then leave space and give details of the complaint in a few words saying a?Help, stranded at Trivandrum railway stationa. The complaint will be registered and action will be taken, said Justice Sreedevi. The women can get the contact number of a hostel by sending an SMS in the same format, Vanitha leave space Hostel leave space TVM, she said.
