BANGALORE: A habeas corpus petition filed in the Karnataka high court by a man from Veerappa Reddy Layout in Bangalore seeking the production of his daughter has ended on a happy note. The girl was studying II year engineering in a Tamil Nadu college and had eloped with an Andhra Pradesh man who claimed to have married her. Now the girl's custody has been restored to her parents.

A division bench of Justices N Ananda and K Govindarajulu recently ordered that the girl be sent back to her parents after NC Raja alias Vimanvel of Chittoor failed to keep his word to the court that he would deposit Rs 3 lakh in her name to help her complete her studies; he also disowned his marriage to her. The girl on her part said she would go with her parents and would pursue her studies. The court warned Raja against meddling with the girl's life and gave liberty to her parents to proceed against him if he made any attempt to interfere with their daughter's life. "We had asked the man to prove his bona fide by depositing Rs 3 lakh with the court and he had agreed. But he failed to keep his word.

The girl's parents have toiled hard to provide her education. The man has disrupted her education and because of him she has lost two semesters," the bench observed while dismissing the habeas corpus petition, which had sought a directive to HAL police and Chittoor police to produce the girl.
