BANGALORE: Twenty-four-year-old H S Mamatha, who went to her native Sringeri in Chikmagalur district following alleged harassment by her husband, returned to her marital house here 10 days ago after neighbours bothered her with queries.

Late on Monday night, Mamatha committed suicide at her apartment in NHCS Layout, Marenahalli, near Vijayangar after the alleged harassment became unbearable.
Mamatha married V A Shivakumar, a software engineer with an IT major, on November 27, 2009. But from day one of their marriage, Shivakumar, also from Sringeri, stayed away from his wife.

"He asked for no dowry but was suspected to be in a relationship with another girl. He spent most of the time at work on the pretext of night duty. He was abusive to my sister. All that mental torture led to her death," an upset H S Muralidhar, brother of Mamatha, told TOI.
Muralidhar, who filed a complaint with Vijayanagar police against Shivakumar, said: "We thought it was a good alliance as the groom too hailed from Sringeri. But things turned out to be nightmarish. Two months ago, Mamatha returned to her parental home. But neighbours started asking her why she was keeping away from her husband for so long following which she decided to return to city."

"My sister was determined to make her marriage work. On Sunday night, she spoke to us and sounded normal. But on Tuesday morning, Shivakumar called me and said she had hanged herself from the ceiling fan," he said.
Vijayanagar police have detained Shivakumar for questioning. A case under Section 306 of IPC (abetment to commit suicide) has been registered against him.
