Oct 18, 2011: Northeastern woman molested near Delhi University, accused on run

NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old woman was allegedly molested by a man in Timarpur area of north Delhi on Monday night. The accused, however, escaped after the incident and has not been identified yet. The victim is a resident of Gandhi Vihar area. She is from the north east and belongs to Naga community, said police.

"The victim is preparing for competitive exams. Last night around 10.30pm, while she was making a call to her parents from a public booth, a person allegedly came from behind and molested her. On hearing the girl shout for help, a neighbour came to the rescue. He even managed to nab the accused person," said a police officer.
Later when they were taking the accused to a nearby police station, a group of persons suddenly gathered and started beating up the accused. Taking advantage of the commotion, the accused managed to escape, said police.
The spokesperson of North East Support Centre and Helpline, Madhu Chandra said it was an unfortunate and demanded that accused be nabbed as soon as possible. "Timapur police station has a record of handling such cases. Two Naga girls were molested by people who came for police recruitment in 2005 and two sisters from Manipur molested in daylight by two men from local in Gandhi Vihar in 2008 in the same police station. The cases were denied and delayed for four days until the pressure from media and top officials mounted on them," Chandra added.
A case has been registered under Section 354 (assault with intent to outrage the modesty of a woman) at the Timarpur police station of north Delhi.
