CHENNAI: The Tirumangalam police have arrested a 37-year-old man on charges of blackmailing students and principal of a school. The man, president of the parent-teacher association of private school had managed to collect pictures of some students and teachers taking bath and threatened to make them public if his children's fees weren't paid, police said.
Police said the principal had accompanied several students on an excursion to Wayanad in Kerala in March last year. Later, the accused, G Muthurajan, collected the pictures from some students who had shot them using cameras and mobile phone cameras during the trip.
"Muthurajan then started blackmailing the principal, asking her to pay the annual fee for his children who study in the same school," Tirumangalam inspector Frank D Ruban told TOI. Initial investigation revealed that Muthurajan, an assistant engineer with the TNEB's Ambattur sub-division demanded Rs five lakh for not making the pictures public.
Police said Muthurajan allegedly made an album of the pictures and began a false propaganda against the principal since September last. "He started showing the album to a lot of parents and tried to created problems for the management," the police officer said. Some of the pictures allegedly show some of the students close to their principal in various spots, police said.
Initially, the principal appeared unconcerned but finally lodged a complaint on October 13 with the Tirumangalam police who registered a case and arrested Muthurajan on Tuesday. "We found hundreds of pictures from his laptop which he allegedly used for blackmailing the complainant," inspector Ruban said. The seized laptop was produced at a city magistrate's court as evidence while seeking the accused's remand, he said.
