NEW DELHI: A trial court has ordered initiation of criminal proceedings against a woman - who allegedly coaxed a 75-year-old rape victim against identifying her alleged rapist- for intimidating witnesses . The court's action came on the complaint by a court's staff.
The staffer heard the woman , identified as Renu, along with the victim's daughter, a witness in the case, try to coax the victim to turn hostile during the proceedings. Additional sessions judge Kamini Lau asked the victim's daughter to explain by November 1 as to why she too should not be prosecuted. The incident came to light when the court's record keeper, Pramod Kumar, heard the two influence the victim.
"Do not utter a word and identify the accused, no matter what the judge tells you," the woman was quoted as saying by Kumar. The court deferred the recording of victim's testimony, saying she was under pressure. While sending the victim to an Old Age Home till November 1, the court ordered that none of her family members would approach or meet her without the court's permission during her stay in Nari Niketan.
