BANGALORE: An infuriated man attacked his wife and then chopped off her hands when she was alone at her parents' home in Mayaganahalli, Ramanagaram, on Thursday afternoon.

Srinivas picked up a machete and cut off Mamata's right hand below the palm and chopped her left hand at her elbow , before fleeing.

Neighbours heard Mamata , 26, screaming, and found her collapsed in a pool of blood, her severed limb beside her. They rushed her to Ramanagaram government hospital with the help of police. There, doctors referred her to a private hospital in the city.

According to police, Mamata's condition is critical and she has been kept under observation for the next 24 hours. Doctors are attempting to reattach her arm.

Police arrested the accused V Srinivas, a cab driver and resident of Peenya, North Bangalore, in the evening.

COUPLE HAD STRAINED TIES

Mamata had returned to her parents' home in the last week of July after Srinivas allegedly beat her up over a trivial issue . The couple have been married for seven years and have no children.

Around 3pm Thursday, Srinivas entered the house and asked Mamata to go home with him. Mamata was alone as her parents, Puttaswamy and Sunandamma, were busy in their petty shop on Mayaganahalli main road.
Mamata reportedly refused and this infuriated Srinivas , who then attacked her with a machete.

The scene was a horrifying replay of the gruesome scene from the 1975 blockbuster Sholay , where Gabbar Singh, the villain, chops off the hands of Thakur. The movie was shot in Ramanagaram.

"Mamata's family alleges that Srinivas had many bad habits, and often harassed Mamata for no reason. Mamata's parents had helped Srinivas get a rented house in Bangalore and helped him during his troubled days," Ramanagaram Rural police said.
