NEW DELHI: A Delhi court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for murdering his sister-in-law after an abortive bid to rape her.
The court has also added a rider that he will not be released before he serves a minimum term of 25 years. Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau said though the case does not come in the category of rarest of rare, which warrants death penalty, "it certainly falls within the category of rare cases".
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on him, stipulating that the amount, if recovered, should be given to the victim's two-and-a-half-year-old daughter. Usually, while awarding life imprisonment , courts do not spell out the exact period one has to spend in prison, as he is also entitled to various kinds of remissions as per jail rules, bringing the term down to 14 years.
The judge said the multiple injuries on the victim's body spoke volumes of the resistance offered by her and the pain she must have undergone before she died.
