NEW DELHI: A 22-year-old woman was allegedly set on fire by her brother-in-law in the Najafgarh area on Saturday morning when the victim was trying to save her sister from harm. The accused, Kuldeep, had reportedly tried to set his wife on fire as she had returned to her parents house but his sister-in-law suffered burns instead. The incident took place around 7am in New Era Nagar.
Bharti had shifted back to her parents home 20 days back because her husband Kuldeep used to beat her regularly. Police said that Kuldeep arrived at his in-laws house on Saturday and the couple began to fight. "Bharti's sister Poonam saw that Kuldeep was trying to pour petrol on Bharti so she intervened and managed to push her sister to safety but was doused by petrol herself. Kuldeep lit a matchbox and ran away," said a police officer.
