CHANDIGARH: The mystery behind the disappearance of 17-year-old Class IX student of Government Model High, School 41, Mandeep Kaur, unfolded on Tuesday when her mother identified her clothes and pictures, which were with the police in Tohana of Fatehabad district.

Mandeep was a resident of Badheri village in Sector 41 and returning home from school when she was kidnapped on August 9 by accused Parminder Singh of Mohali, who is a taxi driver. The police had arrested him but were not sure of his confession that he had murdered the girl as no body was found. It has now come to light that police in Tohana had cremated the girl's body after claiming it as unidentified.

The accused had reportedly developed relations with the girl, who was insisting that Singh should marry her, which had resulted in heated arguments between the two. Following this, the accused pushed her into the canal in Ropar, Punjab.

SHO of police station-39 Charanjit Singh said a case of kidnapping was registered and the accused arrested on August 13 but in the absence of body, murder was not confirmed.

The accused had claimed that the girl did not want to return to her parents, a version cops have refused to accept. Police have seized the car used in murder and added Section 302 (murder) of the IPC in the FIR lodged against the accused.
