Aug 6, 2011: Five held in Sanand gang rape and loot case

AHMEDABAD: A team of Ahmedabad rural police officials nabbed five persons involved in an incident of gang rape and loot that took place in Chekhla villagenear Sanand on July 14. Officials have also identified three other persons involved in the incident and the hunt is on for them.

According to Ahmedabad (rural) police officials, Ramesh Bhil and Badji Patel, natives of Madhya Pradesh, had put up at the outskirts of Chekhla village near Sanand for construction work of a petrol pump. On the night of July 14, a group of eight persons barged in inside their two shanties and robbed the family members of Rs 23,000 and gold ornaments worth Rs 12,000. After the robbery, three members of the group abducted two women and raped them.

"We had formed teams, and started tracking down the accused. First of all, we got to know that the men were drunk. With the help of technical surveillance and questioning of local bootleggers, we got the leads and on Thursday, arrested Raju Jiliya, 25, involved in the case," said G S Mallik, deputy inspector general of police, Ahmedabad Range.

He added that two teams of local crime branch and rapid response (RR) cell questioned the accused and soon arrested Viram Vedva, 20, a resident of Barvala, Raju Chunara, 24, Gitla Chunara, 20, Shanko Chunara, 22, all natives of Botad in Bhavnagar district, from various places in the state on Thursday and Friday. Officials recovered a mobile phone and Rs 5,900 cash from the accused. Officials stated that Chanu Chunara, Kehu Chunara and Ramesh Chunara, all natives of Botad, are yet to be arrested.

Rajiv Ranjan Bhagat, superintendent of police, Ahmedabad rural, said that the gang was found involved in three incidents of robbery that have taken place in Bagodara, Nana Chiloda and Puna gaam near Surat. Two women were raped in the last incident. He added that earlier the group had committed robberies in Sarkhej, Kadi, Mahemdabad, Savli, Virpur and Kapadvanj.

"The modus operandi of the gang is robbery and rape. We believe many of the cases have not been registered due to social stigma. We are yet to conduct the identification parade of the accused in the case," said D J Chavda, inspector of crime branch and investigator of the case.
