Jaipur:  A senior Rajasthan Administrative Service official on Monday beat his 48-year-old wife to death with a cricket bat due to marital discord, said police.

Ramdev Singh, posted as assistant district magistrate in the Jaipur district collector office, suspected that his wife had extra-marital affairs, police said.

"His colleagues had seen him immensely depressed for a few days and even tried to get him professional counselling," a senior police officer told IANS.

Around 9.30 a.m. at his Shyam Nagar area residence, Ramdev Singh repeatedly hit his wife Vashundhara Devi, due to which she died on the spot, police said.

The officer changed his clothes and left for his office after the murder. The police later arrested him.

"We were informed by the couple's daughter, who discovered the body," said the police officer.

He added that during preliminary investigation it came to light that the couple had frequent fights.
