NEW DELHI: Noting that "excessive consumption of liquor again destroyed a family", a trial court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for burning alive his wife following her objections to his drinking.
Sentencing Sonia Vihar resident Raja Ram for setting ablaze his 29-year-old wife Mamta on June 17, 2009, district judge Sunita Gupta, "Anything in excess is harmful to humanity, society and environment. In this case, excessive consumption of liquor has again destroyed a family."
The incident followed a spat between Mamta and Ram over household expenses and excessive consumption of liquor by him. The spat turned ugly as Ram beat up Mamta and set her ablaze after dousing her with kerosene oil, accusing her of giving his hard-earned money to her parents. The prosecution said later as his neighbours gathered, Ram doused the flame and rushed Mamta to theLNJP hospital with 90 per cent burn injuries. She succumbed to her injuries on June 22.
In her dying declaration, she narrated how Ram had set her on fire. Her father also deposed in the court as having been told by Mamta that she was set ablaze by her husband.
