NAGPUR: A middle-aged man killed his wife and then hanged himself after writing a 'sorry' note to his wife sometime on Wednesday night.

The man was found hanging from the ceiling fan at their single room rented house at Panchasheel Nagar in Pachpaoli. The woman's body was lying on the blood stained floor. The incident came to light on Thursday morning after the landlord noticed no movement in the house.

The couple, Sanjay (30) and Shweta Baisare (36), was staying in the rented room since last three years. Neighbours claimed Sanjay suspected that Shweta was having an extramarital affair and there used to be regular fights between the couple.

Senior police inspector BM Dewalkar of Pachpaoli police station said they found a short note from the almirah, probably written by Sanjay. "On a piece of calendar paper, he had written that he will no longer abuse his wife and said 'sorry' to her," said Dewalkar.

Neighbours told cops that they heard Sanjay abusing Shweta for coming home late on Tuesday night. "Later, Sanjay closed the door, and since it was a regular scene, we didn't interfere," said landlord Kamlabai Indurkar.

After that, Indurkar did not see Shweta doing her household work or Sanjay going to work for two days. "She knocked the couple's door and also called out to Shweta, but no one responded. Sensing something amiss, the neighbours removed a tile from the roof and saw Sanjay's body hanging," said Dewalkar.

Pachpaoli police reached the spot after being informed by residents. By the time the cops reached, the neighbours had already broken open the door. Sanjay was hanging from the ceiling fan with a dupatta while Shweta was lying in a pool of blood with stab wounds on her neck and right shoulder. A kitchen knife was used by Sanjay, said police.

Sanjay used to work as a labourer at a power handloom company in Mominpura while Shweta also worked with some small private institute. The couple did not have any children. Some neighbours said Shweta was Sanjay's second wife. "Shweta would often come home late in the evening, which angered Sanjay. He had doubts she was having an illicit relationship," said a neighbour.

Sanjay's family members refused to say anything about the couple. The neighbours were clueless about Shweta's parents. Unconfirmed sources said Shweta had some children from her first husband, and would go to meet them often.

Cops said Sanjay seemed to have stabbed Shweta twice in a fit of rage. "While Shweta was still struggling for life, Sanjay hanged himself and then Shweta succumbed to her injuries," said cops. Pachpaoli police shifted the bodies for post mortem to Government Medical College and then handed them over to Sanjay's relatives.
