VISAKHAPATNAM/WARANGAL: Within 24 hours of a court sentencing a man to death for killing his baby girl in Vizag, two more cases of parents wanting to get rid of their girl children came to light in the state on Saturday. While a man abandoned his wife after she gave birth to a baby girl in Vizag, a couple tried to sell their girl child in Warangal district.
The woman filed a complaint with the Vizag city police commissioner alleging that her husband had abandoned her after she gave birth to the baby 23 days ago. S Praveena, a physiotherapy graduate, lodged the complaint against Suresh, a private firm employee. They were married four years ago. After learning that Praveena had given birth to a girl, Suresh told her that he was leaving for Saudi Arabia and asked her to forget about their marriage.
Meanwhile, a poverty-stricken couple tried to sell their infant in Mahbubabad in Warangal on Saturday. However, the ICDS officials entered the scene and shifted the baby to the day-care centre in Warangal. Betha Ramulu and Saidamma of Marripeda mandal have two daughters and were recently blessed with twins, a baby boy and a girl. "We are not in a position to bring up the children. So, we decided to sell the girl," Saidamma said.
